St. George Parish Church is of Anglican denomination and serves the central parish of St. George. The first church was built here between 1637 and 1641, just a few years after the settlement of the island in 1627. The current structure was built in 1784 and is one of only three churches to have withstood the hurricane of 1831, making it the oldest church on the island. The church is of Georgian design and has been blessed with art and sculpture, and has been beautifully adorned with stained glass windows, all gifts from its parishioners throughout the years. One such gift is the Resurrection painting, "Rise to Power" by American artist Benjamin West, the only American to have become President of the Royal Academy, 1792-1820. -Marsilyn Browne
