Overview

St. John’s Parish Church is an Anglican church situated on a hill overlooking the picturesque east coast of Barbados. The first church was built in 1645. However, as a result of fire and hurricane, it was rebuilt several times. The current church was built in the Gothic style in 1836. It is famous for being the final resting place of Ferdinando Paleologus, a descendent of Emperor Constantine of Constantinople. Paleologus’ family migrated to Barbados, and he was church warden at St. John’s from 1655 to 1656. Also noteworthy is the church pulpit, which was constructed of six different woods by a Barbadian craftsman. Ebony, Barbados mahogany, locust, manchineel, pine and oak make it a sight to behold. An active parish church today, St. John’s is a favorite location to visit by locals and tourists alike. -Marsilyn Browne
