St. Matthias Church, Barbados

One of the later Anglican churches built on the island, it was consecrated in 1850. It is located within the Garrison Historic Area, and since the nineteenth century, it has been the church of the armed forces of the island. The Barbados Defense Force and the Barbados Coast Guard hold many of their services there, and the rector of this church is currently the Chaplain of the Barbados Defense Force. The church is also an historical site recognized by the Barbados National Trust. Within its churchyard is the famous Dauntless Tomb, a marble tomb provided by the Royal Navy, below which lie the remains of crew members of the HMS Dauntless who died in 1852. - Marsilyn Browne
