Overview
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is of Gothic design. The current church was completed in 1899 and consecrated in 1903. An earlier church which was completed in 1848 was destroyed by fire. Its construction represented the beginning of a new openness among the fiercely English and Anglican planter class. Today, there are several denominations of the Catholic Church throughout the island although the Catholic population in Barbados is relatively small. The church is quite vibrant and very involved in the community. A primary school is attached to the cathedral which is located at the corner of Jemmotts Lane and Bay Street, on the south eastern side of Bridgetown. -Marsilyn Browne
