Located on the Valle Nuevo Plateau, the highest in the Antilles at 2,640 meters of altitude, this scientific reserve of 402 square km is located in the middle of the Cordillera Central, the most important mountain range in the Dominican Republic. The predominant tree in the reserve is the Pino Criollo (Pinus Occidentalis), a pinewood tree. Other conifers, such as Sabine (Junipero gracilior), are part of the estimated 249 different species of plants which are protected here. As for the fauna, there is an impressive variety of approximately 64 bird species which inhabit the area.
