Best Kingston Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors
The best Kingston hotels are located in the tony suburb of New Kingston, bounded by Half Way Tree Road on the west and Old Hope Road on the east. New Kingston’s high-rises and embassies are thronged by day, while a lively mix of restaurants, dance clubs and street parties keep things pulsating after dark. Hotels range from those catering to the classic business traveler in town to close a deal, to those blending South Beach vibes with watching the bottom line. Smaller hotels make good choices for those interested in interacting with the locals, since these are often family-run businesses with restaurants serving local dishes. Unlike the resort areas to the north and west, Kingston has no high or low season that dramatically affects room rates. True bargain hunters can find deals around town, but they should weigh carefully whether the money saved is worthwhile, since some of the cheaper hotels are in borderline neighborhoods.
The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel

The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel

Neighborhood: New Kingston Price Range: Expensive
This is Kingston’s Mack Daddy of business hotels. The lobby of the Jamaica Pegasus hums with business handshakes and deals going down. The 17-story high-rise property is the best place to stay in Kingston when it comes to large-scale conferences and official events. This top Kingston hotel has been open for 30 years, so you may feel as though you’ve entered the hotel equivalent of Hot Tub Time Machine. We prefer the rooms that face the picturesque Blue Mountains, but the views of Emancipation Park aren't bad either. The lobby level restaurant dishes up Jamaican and international specialties, and the 24 Seven Café stays open day and night with light snacks from jerk wings to pizza. In the mahogany-furnished Polo Lounge, bartender Franklyn entertains with local lore and, if he’s in the mood, will bring out tasty hors d'oeuvres on the house. The pool bar is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists from neighboring hotels. The gift shop next to the bar stocks the city’s daily newspapers, although the lobby keeps a stack free for the reading pleasure of guests.

Alhambra Inn

Neighborhood: Liguanea Price Range: Budget
We love the 20-room Alhambra Inn for its attention to history. Located across from the National Stadium, the inn has a restaurant, two bars and a courtyard pool. More unexpectedly, it also has more than a thousand antiques on display. A self-proclaimed history aficionado, co-owner Trevor Clarke delights in showing off his treasure trove to guests of the hotel. With relics dating back to the 17th century, his collection is the largest in Jamaica, with each piece personally selected by Clarke himself. His collection started about 30 years ago and has grown to include everything from antique typewriters, dial telephones and suitcases, to original Red Stripe beer bottles and old-fashioned coffee grinders. The curios are not only for the curious, but also for school and church groups who stop by for a lesson in Jamaican history (and then there are the visiting old-timers who smile when they see artifacts that they may have thrown away). Definitely arrange to come for Sunday brunch, when an array of island specialties are laid out, from hominy corn porridge and ackee and codfish to dumplings, boiled bananas and roasted breadfruit.

Altamont Court

Neighborhood: New Kingston Price Range: Budget
Tucked away behind the bigger hotels in New Kingston and a hop, skip and jump away from the trendy Carlos Café, this family-owned hotel (they also own the Altamont West in Montego Bay) may be Kingston’s best-kept accommodation secret. The 58 rooms are simple and comfortable, but the key is that they won’t bust your budget. Room choices also include one-bedroom studios and suites. All rooms have air conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi, cable television and coffee makers. A Jamaican breakfast and daily delivery of the local newspaper are also included in room rates. Outside the rooms you’ll find additional free Wi-Fi at the pool bar, making it a favorite stop for local business people taking five during a busy work day. The Altamont is known for having a friendly staff, and the front desk is more than willing to suggest attractions, restaurants and arrange a reputable cab driver for anyone who is booked on the early flights back to the U.S.

Medallion Hall Hotel

Neighborhood: Liguanea Price Range: Budget
The Medallion Hall Hotel is a true boutique hotel, having only 14 rooms. It’s one of the best places to stay in Kingston if you want to be near Bob Marley Museum, Devon House and Hope Gardens, and less than 20 minutes by car to downtown Kingston. The hotel itself has an attractive courtyard festooned with plants in bloom. It’s popular with leisure and business travelers for its prime location and inexpensive room rates. Guests can chow down on a continental breakfast, making their room dollars stretch even further. Rooms are large and airy, but don’t expect to be knocked out by the functional décor. Ask for a top-floor room to catch the breeze. The onsite modest restaurant serves Jamaican cooking, and the hotel’s English pub will draw you a mean Guinness.
Four Seasons Hotel

Four Seasons Hotel

Neighborhood: New Kingston Price Range: Budget
Once a fine Edwardian home, this is one of the best Kingston hotels for budget-minded travelers. The Four Seasons Hotel has been open since 1960, but upgrades over the years have given the hotel a modern conference room and business center, as well as a popular restaurant and three lively bars. There are 76 rooms in the hotel, which sits behind secure walls surrounded by tropical fruit trees.
