Cancun is the Caribbean’s most-popular destination, and it seems as if just about everyone heads here at one time or another for fun in the sun. Cancun has so much to offer, whether that's lounging on the beach and working on a tan or taking a serious ocean adventure like swimming with whale sharks. There are the cultural attractions of Mayan ruins Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba; a wide choice of restaurants, and countless clubs for dancing the night away. Some people shy away from Cancun because it’s about as touristy as you can get—it was, after all, built solely for that purpose—and the hotels and shopping malls are international-style modern buildings with few gestures toward the local culture. But the beaches are sparkling, and it’s safe, easy to navigate and has just about everything you'd want on a beach holiday. In 2005, Hurricane...See More Wilma wreaked major destruction, and in 2007 Hurricane Dean, though milder, sucked away the renowned white-sand beaches. Then travelers stayed away in 2009 when Swine Flu was out, and now violence from the drug cartels has frightened vacationers away from the whole of Mexico, even though Cancun has remained largely untouched. As a result, there are deals to be had and it’s possible to get great packages including air and hotel. See Less
