Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) is held on the Friday before Palm Sunday, the beginning of the Easter Celebration in Mexico. This feast honors the Mother of Christ and her desolation at his death. It is an important holiday in Mexico because of the role that the Virgin Mary plays throughout the country. Her day is celebrated with processions through the streets while singing special hymns followed by devotional masses. Altars to Our Lady are erected in the streets, homes and churches; all are decorated with flowers and candles.
