The Basílica de Zapopan or Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan is one of the oldest in Jalisco and is considered an architectural gem. Franciscan friars built the Doric colonial era basilica in 1690. It has Gothic vaulted ceilings, a Corinthian altar and an ornate Plateresque-style facade typical of the Spaniards. Honoring the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, known today as the Virgen de Zapopan, every October 12th the Romería de la Virgen de Zapopan religious festival unfolds here.
