This building has a long-standing tradition for having been an important meeting centre, where the most momentous parties and cultural events of the region were held. It is built in Neo-classical style, like most of the constructions around it, but has a clear French influence. Built in 1866, a great fire consumed it in 1914 necessitating its entire re-construction in 1922 with the designs of Alfred Giles. Its ample halls are distributed throughout both levels, reached by the elaborate grand wrought-iron staircase of singular beauty.
