Overview
A plan of Port of Spain dating back to the 1970s indicates that a promenade was supposed to be created in the area Work began on the promenade in 1993. The following year, aided by funding from the nearby banks, the promenade was further extended, stretching from the Cipriani Statue to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The area was named the Brian Lara Promenade in honor of Trinidad and Tobago's most celebrated cricketer and record-breaking batsman. Approximately 125,000 people cross the Promenade daily. The Promenade can be considered the nucleus of downtown Port of Spain. It is surrounded by several fast food restaurants, the area known as Bankers' Row and the Eric Williams Financial Complex, among other buildings.
