Planning a trip to Cancun? Our experienced travel editors break down the town so you can make the most of your stay. Let these itineraries be your guide, whether you're here for a weekend or a whole week.
1 Take a snorkeling or diving trip to Cozumel and the barrier reef, lunch included.
2 Have dinner at Labna, where you can sample authentic Yucatecan cuisine, or El Tacolote, for tacos, ceviche or parrillada (grilled meats), and mariachis.
1 Take the ferry or water-taxi to Isla Mujeres for shopping and relaxing on the beach.
2 Have lunch at Rolondi’s Pizzeria, the sister to the Cancun spot. Or, for a natural experience, take a boat trip to Isla Contoy, the island preserve where the Great Maya Reef begins.
1 Plan your day around the trip to Chichen Itza. You’ll have lunch at or near the ruins.
2 You’ll most likely be exhausted when you get back to Cancun, so head over to casual El Shrimp Bucket and call it a night.
Day 4
1 Pack a picnic lunch and visit Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, where you can go fishing, drift on inner tubes on the currents down Maya-created canals, bird-watch and visit a small area of Mayan ruins.
2 On the way home, stop at the ruins at Tulum and swim in the cove.
3 Back in Cancun, have a romantic dinner in the garden at La Habichuela in El Centro.
4 Drop by Casa Rolandi, where the upstairs bar, Very Wine, is a serene spot for a late-night drink and that Cuban cigar.
Day 5
1 Visit either Xcaret or Xel-Ha if you have the kids with you. If not, you might consider golf at Playa Mujeres.
2 If it’s whale shark season, don’t miss an opportunity to swim with these massive but gentle sea creatures.
3 Another option, if you’re a culture hound, is to visit the ruins at Coba. You’ll eat lunch at the golf club, on the whale shark excursion or lakeside at Coba.
4 When you get back to Cancun, hit Happy Hour at La Destileria and have dinner in your hotel. You’ll be pooped.
Day 6
1 Drop by Mercado 28 for some souvenir shopping and practice bargaining.
3 Spend the afternoon jet-skiing, kayaking or parasailing in Laguna Nichupte, then put on your chic duds and have a romantic dinner in a private palapa at Thai Lounge.
4 If it’s the weekend, stick around for the DJ. Otherwise, finish the evening salsa dancing at Mambo Cafe.
Day 7
1 Slow down today as your time is running out. Visit shopping malls Kukulcan Plaza or La Isla for a last stab at shopping.
2 Go back to your hotel and grab a few hours by the pool.
