Overview
Associated with Jesus' final journey to Jerusalem riding a white donkey and hailed as the messiah, (Matthew 21:1-7), the annual Christian Palm Sunday processions begin here. Get here by car or taxi, and then take a lovely walk to the bottom of the Mount of Olives. Crusader remains are visible by the altar, and the church possesses a remarkable stele, decorated in medieval times with paintings (now restored) depicting Jesus' journey. A mirror placed behind the stone enables visitors to appreciate all sides of this work of art. Be sure to look up to the church ceiling, painted with flowers and leaves of the Holy Land. To enter the gate, pull the rope and a guard will let you in.
