Eski Ingiliz Karakolu, Istanbul

You'll find the Eski Ingiliz Karakolu in a former British prison (hence the restaurant's name, translated into Türkish) in the historic Genoese quarter of the city. This popular restaurant serves up authentic Georgian cuisine. The owner, Mete Göktug, is an architect and one of a rare breed, intent on preserving the original architectural fabric of the dıştrict. This is the main reason he converted the old jail into a restaurant. In the name of authenticity, practically nothing has been done to spruce up the place: the paint is peeling off the walls and prisoners' graffiti is the only decor. This makes it atmospheric to say the least. The food here is exceptional.
