All Souls Procession, Tucson

Inspired by Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos holiday, this annual event regularly attracts over 20,000 participants.  This public ceremony honors the soul in all beings and objects, animate and inanimate. The procession is the highlight of the weekend following Halloween and takes place on a Sunday evening. Costumes, altars, installation art, performers, music and dance take place all along the two mile parade route through the heart of downtown.  It culminates in a performance and ritual burning of a large urn, which is filled with the offerings, hopes and prayers of the participants. The twenty plus year parade was created for the public to mourn, express and celebrate the universal theme of Death. -Ted Parks
