Anaheim OVERVIEW
Anaheim may be smack in the heart of Southern California’s Orange County, but it’s hardly the “O.C.” of TV. The beautiful beaches, perfect-bodied surfers and exclusive oceanfront homes of Newport Beach or Laguna Beach are at least a 20-minute, gritty freeway drive away. No, Anaheim is an inland, middle-class suburb of Los Angeles sprawling in tract housing. So why should you come? The same reason millions of people flock to Anaheim each year—to visit Disneyland, Walt Disney’s original theme park. There may be bigger, better theme parks elsewhere, but Disneyland still has a firm hold on the national Zeitgeist. It’s still the Happiest Place on Earth, the ultimate family destination, where Baby Boomers can watch their grandchildren spin in the same teacups that made them dizzy when they were kids. In 2001, to keep new visitors coming, the Walt Disney Company added another theme park, Disney’s California Adventure, and a shopping and entertainment complex, the Downtown Disney District. With ...See More Disneyland, the three venues fall under the umbrella company, Disneyland Resorts. Since it’s impossible to visit all three attractions in a single day, park-goers began extending their stays—to the tune of cash registers cha-chinging all over Anaheim. Of course, Anaheim’s more than just an L.A. suburb or the home of the world’s most famous mouse. It’s also home to two professional sports teams, MLB’s The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks, and a thriving convention center that attracts business travelers from all over the world. The city is in a state of redevelopment, working to convert its industrial centers into urban mixed-use neighborhoods that will attract younger, edgier—more “O.C.”—residents. That’s a transformation, however, that may take quite a while. See Less
