Apart from its tenuous claim to fame for inventing strawberry shrimp, Mandarette is unassumingly nestled on the side of Beverly Boulevard as a retro-style gourmet Chinese restaurant. The decor is quaint and endearing. The staff is courteous and guileless, and the portions are sensible, stressing flavor over quantity. Beer and wine are available, to go with a substantial assortment of dishes. The classic strawberry shrimp recipe, invented by Mandarette's original chef, is a culinary delight yielded by the process of sauteing fresh juicy prawns in mashed strawberry mass and seasoning it with mouthwatering house sauces.
