Overview

Rightfully considered by many to be the prettiest hike in the area, the Mishe Mokwa loop takes you on a 6-mile trek. Starting at Yerba Buena Road and leading you through a variety of terrains, the trail culminates at Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the Santa Monica mountains. Depending on the time of year (hikers are welcome year-round) you will encounter a nice variety of local flora and fauna. But the topmost attraction of the hike is the grand view opening from the peak, spanning the stretch from the San Gabriel mountains in the east to Catalina island in the west. With its elevation gain of 1400 feet, the trail makes for a moderate endeavor, well accessible to a novice while still rewarding for a seasoned hiker. A few side trails stem from the loop, allowing for an extended trek. Restroom facilities and free maps of the trails are available to hikers daily at Circle K ranch, just a mile down the road headed west. - Jamie Zum
