Best Palm Springs Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors

The good news is most of Palm Springs’ resorts have adjusted their rates to the economy, so a luxurious experience may be more affordable than you think. Almost all the hotels and resorts offer substantially lower prices for midweek stays than for weekends. Budget accommodations with the unique ambiance of Palm Springs (which is to say, not part of a cookie-cutter chain) are a bit harder to find, but there are a few gems. Many of Palm Springs’ hotels are within walking distance of the shops and restaurants downtown, while the two biggest luxury legends are at opposite ends of the city. In any price range, you’ll find the sunny resort lifestyle of Palm Springs meets expectations.

Le Parker Meridien Palm Springs

Neighborhood: Twin Palms Price Range: Expensive

This is where the celebrities stay—and the rates show it. During the Palm Springs Film Festival all the stars stay here, according to the hotel’s general manager. You get what you pay for; the rooms are stylish, the service is good and the toiletries are the best anywhere: Hermes soap, Penhaligon’s shampoo. You’ll see “beautiful people” by the pool, in the bar, sipping lattes in the (expensive) café and in the dark and moody dining room. The grounds and pool are carefully landscaped for privacy. The spa is good, but its indoor pool somehow seems cavernous. On the downside, The Parker is away from all the action—except for Resale Therapy, one of Palm Springs’ best consignment shops, across the street.

The Riviera Resort & Spa Kevin Syms, Riviera Resort & Spa

The Riviera Resort & Spa

Neighborhood: Uptown Price Range: Moderate

A massive makeover in 2008 breathed new life into this mid-century celebrity playground, which had been showing its age. It was the setting for the 1963 hit movie “Palm Springs Weekend,” starring Connie Stevens and Troy Donahue, and little had changed. But now the Riviera is buffed out. It attracts a young, sophisticated crowd of sun-worshippers, with a huge free-form pool, group cabanas, a Bikini Bar (where female servers wear bikinis), chic indoor-outdoor dining and a spa that looks like it’s straight out of the Casbah. The Riviera is a mile from the downtown action, but a new cherry-red trolley solved that problem with hourly shuttle service to town.

Pepper Tree Inn Peppertree Inn

Pepper Tree Inn

Neighborhood: Uptown Price Range: Moderate

Owned by a retired businessman-turned-hotelier, this Spanish colonial-style boutique hotel is a jewel of a find for visitors who want a small, elegant and quiet stay. The rooms are all different, but they have a decidedly Santa Fe look, which reflects the way Palm Springs looked in the 1920s-‘30s. Walls are hand-stenciled, there’s handcrafted furniture and some rooms have a fireplace and/or an in-room Jacuzzi. The property is enclosed, with a gorgeous main gate created out of green glass and metal to look like, you guessed it, a pepper tree. The Pepper Tree is within easy walking distance of the Uptown antique shops, galleries, boutiques and cafes. Copley’s Restaurant is across the street. The downtown scene also is walking distance. Rooms start at budget prices midweek.

Viceroy Palm Springs Viceroy Hotel Group

Viceroy Palm Springs

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Moderate

Flamboyant 1960s Regency-style décor and upscale sophistication have put The Viceroy on the A-list. Snuggled in a residential neighborhood two blocks from downtown, the Viceroy’s white-washed cottages date from 1933, when stars such as Orson Welles and Joan Crawford hid out there; however, the majority of the rooms are traditional hotel guest rooms, tricked out with glossy white, black and yellow surfaces, mirrored coffee tables and willowy greyhound statues. The restaurant and bar are expensive, and frequented by the local elite. Two adult pools, one family pool, cozy gardens and a small, but pampering spa, make this a good call for professionals eager to chill.

Hotel Zoso

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Moderate

Stylish and eye-catching, decorated in bold reds, blacks and chrome, and a prime location in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, not to mention a happening pool party scene, make the Hotel Zoso a magnet for girls’ and guys’ getaways. But the hotel has a split personality; its large convention space often brings in a corporate crowd. The lobby bar features live entertainment and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Orbit In

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Moderate

Small and residential, this sophisticated nine-room vintage 1957 courtyard-style inn was one of the first meticulous renovations of a modernist lodging. It opened in 2001, offering authentic detail down to melamine plates. Modernism fans will recognize the genuine Eames chairs and Bertoia furniture. The Albert Frey house is visible on a ridge above the inn. All the rooms have wet bars and kitchenettes; the Rat Pack Suite is the biggest and best. General Manager Jade Nelson shakes a mean “Orbitini” during the complimentary cocktail hour around the saltwater pool. Free daytime use of bicycles offers a pleasant way to explore the residential surroundings, and at night, downtown Palm Springs’ restaurants and bars are only two blocks away.

Ace Hotel & Swim Club

Ace Hotel & Swim Club

Neighborhood: Twin Palms Price Range: Moderate

This Portland-based hotel group blew into town in 2009, and with its off-beat, bohemian style, turned a 1965 Howard Johnson into the unique Ace Hotel & Swim Club. The Ace bucks the norm with retro-minimalism—draped fabric in the rooms create an indoor-outdoor luxury camping vibe—and vintage National Geographic magazines grace the nightstands. The Ace offers first-class Palm Springs fun, from Sunday DJ parties at the pool and “booze sno cones” (yup, they’re laced with alcoholic beverages) to a full-service spa, with outdoor massage yurts. The King’s Highway restaurant and The Amigo Room bar attract the locals with creative, inexpensive made-from-scratch food and artisan cocktails. Dogs are welcome and Wi-Fi is free. Downtown Palm Springs is about 2 miles down the road.

Palm Mountain Resort & Spa The Palm Mountain Resort and Spa

Palm Mountain Resort & Spa

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Budget

This may be Palm Springs’ best-kept secret. Just one block from the center of downtown, it’s still got the bones of its prior life as a Holiday Inn, but it’s been totally reincarnated into a charmer, with white lattice-work, flower-filled gardens and contemporary, though not striking, furnishings. The rooms are large, with mini-fridges. The pool is big and sunny, ideal for relaxation. There is no meal service, but you don’t need it, you’re so close to all the downtown restaurants.

Villa Royale Inn

Neighborhood: South Palm Springs Price Range: Budget

This is another great find. Ice-skating great and film star Sonja Henie built this elegant Mediterranean-style estate as a vacation compound for herself and her close friends in the 1940s. It offers true “old Palm Springs” romance, with antique-filled rooms, tile floors and two pools surrounded by old-growth gardens and fountains. Every room is unique. Of course, the cheapest rooms are the smallest, but the antiques and old-world touches make up for the size. Its restaurant (expensive) is one of the best in Palm Springs, attracting discerning visitors and locals with modern-continental cuisine. But you don’t have to spend a bundle on eats, because daily, cooked-to-order breakfast is included. The Villa Royale is about a mile from downtown.

Caliente Tropics Resort

Neighborhood: Twin Palms Price Range: Budget

Elvis swam here! Built in 1964 and restored to its flamboyant tiki-style best in 2001, the Caliente Tropics has one of the largest pools in Palm Springs, at a whopping 65 feet long. Original tikis grin from between the more than 60 sky-high palm trees and by the rock waterfall in the lobby. The story goes that in its heyday, the resort was a favorite hangout for Elvis and the Rat Pack. The rooms range from standard to suites, with cool contemporary décor. The hotel’s former bar, where the old celebs held court, is now an independent restaurant. A few other cafes are within walking distance. Otherwise, it’s about 2 miles to downtown.
