Urban Solace, San Diego

Located in a recently redesigned building that would be more at home in the French Quarter of New Orleans than in the heart of newly-artsy North Park, this bar and restaurant has grown up out of a previously ordinary coffee house at the same location. It provides addictive food for those who don't know what a kitchen at home is for - and the gourmet white mac and cheese will make you forget too. There's an extensive and slightly pricey wine and beer list but the fine print says "actual vintages may differ from those listed". On Sundays, locals flood the "Bluegrass Brunch" which offers music and mimosas. - Kathleen Wilder
