Getting into a San Francisco state of mind before your visit is easy, as the city has played a starring role in innumerable movies, books and music. When it comes to flicks showcasing San Francisco, Hitchcock's classic ‘Vertigo’ rises to the top, featuring so many of the city's famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Nob Hill, Legion of Honor, Fort Point and Mission Dolores. Other movies sure to get you in a City by the Bay mood: ‘Mrs. Doubtfire,’ 'The Rock,’ ‘Bullitt,’ ‘Joy Luck Club’ and ‘Milk.’ On the literature front, Armistead Maupin's ‘Tales of the City’ will absolutely get you excited for your own fun adventures. While Andrew Sean Greer's novels ‘The Story of a Marriage’ and ‘The Confessions of Max Tivoli’ provide interesting historical perspectives of the city. And, of course, a read of Jack Kerouac's ‘On the Road’ and ‘Howl and Other Poems’ by Allen Ginsberg will put you in a beatnik mindset. Music? Tony Bennett's ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ is a classic, while practically anything from the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin will whisk you back to Flower Power days.
