The Biltmore first threw its doors open in 1927, and it remains the top Santa Barbara hotel and the locals' landmark gathering place for special occasions. No one ever mentions that the “beachfront” resort is in fact across Channel Drive from the beach. But hey, the grounds and buildings here are absolutely beautiful; creamy adobe with red tile roofs and walkways shaded by graceful palms. The public rooms are decorated with Oriental carpets, beamed ceilings and fireplaces, and many guestrooms (once you get into the Deluxe category) have fireplaces and terraces or balconies. Guests get access to the membership-only Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club (completed in 1937 but redecorated since then by Peter Marino), where Tydes restaurant serves sophisticated California-Mediterranean cuisine composed of local ingredients.
