This is the poor man’s Biltmore, but only for poor men with disposable income. Now managed by Hyatt, the building is still as beautiful as it was when it first opened in 1931, but it is in need of a major renovation on the interior. Still, what you’re paying for is the location on East Beach, a mile from State Street, and a short ride on the 25-cent Waterfront Shuttle. On the exterior, the Hotel Mar Monte embodies everything that we love about Santa Barbara—the architecture is Spanish, white adobe with red tile roofs, and a tower that lends it an air of grandeur. It’s right across Cabrillo Boulevard from the beach, so the location can’t be beat. The hotel has an outdoor heated pool, a small spa, and a small exercise facility. One category of room is “petite,” and they’re not kidding—they’ve managed to squeeze a queen-sized bed into 200 square feet. In general, the rooms are a bit tatty and the beds are far from the pillow-tops you might expect to find in this price range, but as we said, you're here for the location and the architectural beauty.
