Boulder Pop Culture

Arguably the most famous role for Boulder was as the setting for ‘Mork & Mindy,’ a lightweight sci-fi sit-com hit series that ran for four years and launched Robin Williams’ career. The Mork & Mindy House is at 1619 Pine St. For years after its 1989-72 airing, the owners surrounded it with a stockade fence to deter lookie-loos. The New York Deli at 1117 Pearl St. is now gone, replaced by Hapa Sushi. Scenes from the “The Glenn Miller Story” were filmed on the CU campus with James Stewart playing the ill-fated bandleader who was enrolled there. ‘Perfect Murder, Perfect Town,’ first a book and then mini-series about the still-unsolved Christmas 1996 murder of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey, is the rare true-crime subject set in Boulder. ‘The Stand’ is a post-apocalyptic novel by Stephen King in which Boulder plays a part of the story. And finally, chick flick/chick lit fans can find Boulder in ‘Smart Women,’ Judy Blume’s book about two divorced women and their teenage daughters living in Boulder, and Catch & Release’ a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Garner with several scenes filmed in Boulder.
