Best Denver Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors
Staying in downtown Denver will cost you a few more bucks than if you stayed out in the suburbs, but if the Mile High City is your destination, it’s worth the extra charge to be in the heart of downtown. Most of the best Denver hotels are located closer to LoDo and the Commercial District, and they will be a little more expensive, but there are a few budget chain hotels in that area. If you’re bringing your car (or renting one), check out the parking situation at your hotel before you book; especially in LoDo, parking is often an extra charge and it can be steep. Here are some of the best Denver hotels, from budget properties to the crème de la crème.

The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa

Neighborhood: Central Business District Price Range: Expensive
The historic Brown Palace is a Denver icon. This AAA Four Diamond hotel was Denver's crown jewel when it opened back in 1892, and "The Brown" is beloved to this day, constantly topping the lists of best places to stay in Denver. With its huge stained-glass atrium lobby, the hotel is a monument to the Gilded Age and the enormous fortunes that flowed from the mines and stockyards of Colorado. Today it provides all the luxuries you’d expect from a four star hotel, from thick comforters on the bed to plush terry robes in the room and there’s a large modern spa with numerous treatment options. Residents go to The Brown for its Traditional Afternoon Tea or dinner in one of the six restaurants. The Palace Arms is the fine dining venue, with an extensive wine cellar and entreés that include Bison Rossini, served with truffled foie gras. Don’t feel like dropping $350 to $1,500 per night for a room? You can still experience The Brown by taking the hotel tour, offered Wednesdays and Saturdays at 3PM. Reservations are required (one day in advance is usually enough time to secure a spot on the tour) and there’s a small charge ($10) but it’s worth it to hear the colorful stories, including a few ghost stories. And don’t let the rack rates scare you; The Brown has been known to discount its rooms by almost 50 percent in the off season.

Grand Hyatt Denver

Grand Hyatt Denver

Neighborhood: Central Business District Price Range: Expensive
You’ll pay a premium for the fabulous location right next to the 16th Street Mall, but the Grand Hyatt, one of the best Denver hotels, is worth the extra coin. This large AAA Four Diamond hotel has service and amenities to match its rates and its ratings, though it can get crowded with business travelers when large conventions like the National Western Stock Show are in town. The 550 guest rooms are spacious and equipped with iHome radios, large flatpanel TVs and walk-in closets. There’s good dining in the hotel, but it’s just steps from the front door to the whole variety of restaurants along the Mall. Atop the hotel is the Pinnacle Club, a meetings and social venue with views over the city and the mountains that stretch all the way to Pike’s Peak, 100 miles away. Just above the Pinnacle Club there’s a rooftop mini-resort complete with indoor pool, fitness club, tennis and jogging track plus an outdoor Jacuzzi with that same forever-and-a-day view. Even if you’re a flatlander and can’t handle working out this far above sea level, grab a bottle of water and walk around the track: you’ll see more than 200 named peaks and gaze over an area roughly the size of Massachusetts.

Hotel Monaco Denver

Neighborhood: Central Business District Price Range: Moderate
If Corporate Beige is too boring for you, take a look at the Hotel Monaco. This Kimpton Hotel property is located in an historic building just off the 16th Street Mall and the style is anything but boring with bright, contrasting colors and a whimsically painted ceiling in its otherwise classical lobby. The Monaco is also pet-friendly: The Pampered Pet Package includes a welcome basket for Fido, four hours of dog-sitting and in-room pet bowls and beds. You can even leave your pooch with its new friends at Hotel Monaco while you explore Denver. Don't have a pet? No worries. Hotel Monaco can provide an in-room goldfish to keep you company! Just ask for one at the front desk. The property has several fun twists for humans, too, such as the animal print robes in every guest room. Hotel Monaco is one of the top Denver hotels, as fun and exciting as the city itself. The John Lennon, Miles Davis and Grace Slick suites all have memorabilia, including handwritten lyrics, from these musicians. The on-premises restaurant, Panzano’s, is renowned for its Northern Italian cuisine and its wine list.

The Westin Tabor Center Denver

The Westin Tabor Center Denver

Neighborhood: 16th Street Mall Price Range: Moderate
The Westin Tabor Center has a phenomenal location—smack on the 16th Street Mall, the 16-block long pedestrian mall that runs through the heart of Denver (though the hotel entrance is around the corner on Lawrence Street). Although it’s been a AAA Four Diamond hotel each of the past 14 years and is located in LoDo, The Westin Tabor Center has been known to offer rooms at $99/night at various times throughout the year. The hotel has remodeled rooms and a well-equipped fitness center. The on-site spa, rooftop pool and outdoor whirlpool can help you relax (there’s something about sipping cocktails on a chaise lounge while looking out at the Rockies that makes it hard to feel stressed). There are dozens of restaurants to choose from just outside the hotel door or you can just take the elevator down to the Tabor Center branch of The Palm steakhouse.

Comfort Inn Downtown

Comfort Inn Downtown

Neighborhood: Central Business District Price Range: Budget
This hotel is an exceptional value, especially considering its great location across from the Brown Palace Hotel just one block from 16th Street Mall and two blocks from the Denver Pavilions shopping complex. Yes, it’s a chain, but it was recently remodeled and has a clean, welcoming décor. If you'll be mountain biking, snowboarding and brewery hopping for most of your stay the Comfort Inn is one of the best Denver hotels for quality accommodations at a great price - the décor may not be exceptional but the majority of your time will be spent enjoying the Mile High City outside your hotel anyway. Free wireless internet and free deluxe continental breakfast are included in your stay and there’s valet parking onsite at a cost of about $20 per day. The hotel has a spacious up-to-date fitness center and is pet friendly.

Hampton Inn & Suites Denver-Downtown

Hampton Inn & Suites Denver-Downtown

Neighborhood: Northwest Price Range: Budget
Sure, this is part of Hilton’s cookie cutter corporate empire, but that has its advantages, too. For one, it’s in impeccable condition and, inside the Hampton Inn & Suites Denver-Downtown, you’ll find comfy duvet-covered beds, a nice pool and workout room, free WiFi and breakfast, and decent-sized rooms—all at a good price. The added benefit is that’s it’s just a five-minute drive to LoDo. The drawback is that you’ll pay around $20 per night for parking.

Hotel VQ

Price Range: Budget
This high-rise budget hotel is smack in the middle of Denver's entertainment hub. It's adjacent to Invesco Field at Mile High and just a half-mile from Elitch Gardens and the Pepsi Center. The Skybox Grill & Sports Bar on the 14th floor, is a favorite stop for residents before Broncos games, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hotel VQ has an outdoor heated pool, which is great if you have kids, and a fitness center if you need to keep up with your abs and glutes while you’re here. We love the fact that there is free parking and, best of all, if you don’t want to schlep your car all over the city there is a free shuttle that will drop you off at downtown attractions, restaurants and shopping.

Magnolia Hotel Denver

Neighborhood: Northwest Price Range: Budget
The Magnolia Hotel is highly recommended if you’re looking for digs that are low cost but not low end. Located just a block away from the 16th Street Mall, the location is close to all of the attractions of LoDo, but the interior is quiet and well insulated from the surrounding city buzz. The hotel has a boutique feel, and a recent $7 million makeover gave the interior a retro 1970s Mod look. The bar in the lobby, Harry’s has a limited food menu but you’re only steps from all the eateries on 16th Street. At night, Harry’s is one of LoDo’s hip hangouts for locals as well as visitors. There’s a fitness room upstairs, which you may want to use after you indulge in the hotel’s complimentary hot breakfast and the bedtime cookie bar. The Magnolia also has a free shuttle that can drop you off at locations throughout downtown and runs from 7AM to 11PM.
