Vail OVERVIEW
What began as a small ski town designed to emulate a Bavarian village has now become the second-largest ski resort in North America. Vail, Colorado is best known for its world-class skiing, but it's a year-round destination for those who love the great outdoors. A training ground for skiers and snowboarders (does the name Lindsey Vonn ring a bell?) during the winter, Vail is a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts during the summer (professional kayaker Brad Ludden calls Vail home). It’s a place filled with music throughout the year, with Snow Daze and Spring Back to Vail bringing in headliners like Ludacris, Government Mule, Kid Rock and Guster during the winter and spring, respectively. During Vail's short but beautiful summer season, Bravo! Valley Music Festival sets the Gore Range alive with the sounds of the New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and other talent. Vail is located in a long valley, with Interstate 70 bisecting the north and south areas. While the bulk of the village ...See More areas and the ski resort lay to the south, the north side of Vail is mostly residential areas and a commercial shopping area. The destination consists of more than just the Town of Vail proper; visitors have the opportunity to explore the quirky towns of Minturn and Red Cliff (to the west of Vail) and the swanky Beaver Creek Resort (located about 15 minutes down the road from Vail).
