Fort Lauderdale is a “sandwich” city—the historic luxury of Palm Beach is a bit to the north and the nuevo sophistication of Miami is further south. Fortunately, the recent arrival of a W, added to the traditional stock of Old Fort Lauderdale hotels, has moved the area’s accommodations up a notch. The happy news for visitors is that there are very good rooms at very good rates, even during South Florida’s frenetic winter snowbird season.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Expensive As understated as the W is overstated, the Atlantic deserves all the hype that has followed it, winning a fistful of awards from travel magazines. The smallish (124 rooms), stylish beachside hotel features seriously oversized rooms done in muted colors that convey a sense of tranquility. The luxurious Spa Atlantic, Trina Restaurant & Lounge, 24-hour concierge service and a gorgeous pool where you can enjoy lunch and cocktails make it worth the expense to stay here. Oh, and it’s just a few minutes away from the best shops, galleries and nightlife. Choose from the guest rooms, suites or penthouse suites, all of which have ocean views. Check the website for summertime specials that can bring your rate below $200 per night, but in season a deluxe king will set you back $350 per night or more.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Expensive If you’re looking for high style and you’re just not into all that marble, check into the W. This long-awaited hotel (announced in 2003) did not disappoint when it finally opened its doors in 2009. The beachfront high-rise makes the most of its location with enormous picture windows and balconies, while the interior is trendy mod to the max. Aimed squarely at the under-40s with cash to burn, the W (which is owned by Sheraton/Westin parent Starwood) has 517 rooms, including everything from basic rooms and suites to two-bedroom condos. Some people like it so much they’ve bought the condos. The W pitches itself as an alternative to pretentious upscale hotels, though it has its own hyperbolic vernacular: The lobby is called the “living room,” a bit kitschy but there are lounges, billiards, games and live music. It's cool to look up through the beamed ceiling into the glass-bottomed rooftop swimming pool. Just make sure you don’t lose any bikini parts diving in! In addition to contemporary and comfortable accommodations, the W is home to the much-lauded Steak 954 restaurant and the famous Bliss Spa. All of this splendor will run you, at the low end, $209 a night, but check the website for specials.
Neighborhood: Downtown Las Olas Price Range: Moderate The only hotel situated directly on Las Olas Boulevard in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, the Riverside is enormous, elegant and in a prime location. Out front you’ll often find locals socializing over lunch or drinks as pedestrians stroll Las Olas; inside, the newly renovated hotel is within walking distance of shops, restaurants and all the city’s must-see attractions, plus it’s a 15-minute drive from the airport. Choose from a traditional room with vintage decor or a classic room with Tommy Bahama appointments; the latter starts at under $125 per night in the summer and remains under $200 well into the winter months. It may not be sexy, but it’s elegant Old Fort Lauderdale at its best.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Expensive If the W seems a little too mod and you like being surrounded by marble when you’re paying top rates for a room, this Ritz-Carlton is exactly what you expect from the brand: high-end service, plush décor, fine dining and marble galore. If classic luxury is your thing, this is your destination. Everything you need or want is here, and if it’s not, they’ll get it for you. If you golf, you can play on the Grande Oaks Golf Course, normally for members only. All this is good to know, considering you’ll be paying $400 or more per night during the high season, but the Ritz-Carlton is never about the price, it’s about the value and the experience, and the Fort Lauderdale branch delivers in spades.
Neighborhood: Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Price Range: Budget One of the older beach resorts in the area, the Ocean Sky offers plenty of value for the $71 room rate (at the low end). It’s about a 15-minute drive to downtown from here, but the heated oceanfront pool, Tiki Bar, free Wi-Fi, room service, watersports equipment rentals and excellent service all add up to a very attractive option. There’s an unremarkable restaurant in the hotel, a good option for breakfast, but with what you’re saving on the room you can experience the best of the city’s dining elsewhere. Tip: Check the hotel’s website for package deals.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Moderate Yes, this is a Hilton, but specifically suited to South Florida visitors, with its ocean-blue and tranquil sand-colored décor, poolside and beach cabanas, infinity-edge swimming pool, and, like all good Fort Lauderdale hotels, the Spa Q, where you can take a massage or get a facial. Like all Fort Lauderdale hotels worth considering, this one allows you quick and easy access to the local attractions. Rates dip as low as $159 for a room with a king-sized bed and ocean view. You can even get a suite, depending on the time of year you visit, for $169; it comes with a few more perks than a regular room, like twice-daily housekeeping, kitchens with stainless-steel appliances, and deep-soaking whirlpool tubs in the Italian marble bathrooms.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Moderate Originally a bed and breakfast when it was purchased in 1948, The Pillars was reborn as a luxury hotel in the 1950s, then purchased again just 13 years ago. Today, it’s a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. There’s a restaurant—the Secret Garden—on premises exclusively for guests, 18 individually decorated rooms and suites in British Colonial and Island Plantation themes, views of the Intracoastal, and they have a partnership with two local spas, including the Ritz-Carlton Spa, so guests of The Pillars enjoy special privileges, including spa services in your room, poolside or dockside.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Budget The best rate we found here was $89 for a courtyard view room and marina view rooms. After that, you’re into the triple digits. But stick with the great rates, because they’ll buy you a comfy room with king size or double beds and a very nice view (some even have a private balcony). There’s no shortage of amenities, either: Club Nautico, the dive shop and resort store, is your source for renting a boat, jet skis and other water sports equipment; there’s a massive, heated swimming pool, and just across the skywalk, direct beach access. There are three restaurants on the property to choose from.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Budget Billing itself as a “Key West-style” resort, this will fulfill your basic needs in a hotel: beds, bathroom, cable TV and, if you should choose a suite over a standard room, a pull-out sofa, kitchenette equipped with dishes and refrigerator. There’s also a patio bar, a restaurant with happy hour and live music at night, a marina, beach volleyball out back and a basketball court if you’re inclined to shoot hoops while you’re here, a pool and Jacuzzi, and a convenient little general store where you can pick up sunblock, magazines, postcards and candy. All that, and rates start at just $79 per night.
Neighborhood: Fort Lauderdale Beach Price Range: Moderate The same family has owned this place for more than 50 years, and they’ve made it their mission to convey their sense of family to their guests. The bright rooms evoke a Key West feeling, with island-style furnishings, fluffy bedding, coffee makers, microwaves and bathrobes in the rooms. Happily, 24-hour room service is available. There’s a private beach outside and a big pool. The Spa at Lago Mar is a European-style, state-of-the-art fitness center. The founder cut his teeth at the legendary Cavalier in Virginia Beach and brought that same sense of traditional elegance with him to Lago Mar, earning a Four-Diamond rating from AAA.
