Spanning the coastal areas of two thirds of the island, the ancient Hawaiian footpath was what connected villages and districts on the island. Several areas of the footpath are still accessible and visitors are welcome to hike the easy trail that traverses exclusive condominium complexes, luxury resorts, golf courses, fishing areas, even pristine beachfront areas. The lava rock trail is hot and dry in most areas and certainly rocky in all areas, so hiking any part of this trail would necessitate lots of fresh water and sunscreen. No permission is needed and no fees are assessed. However, since the ancient footpath is a cherished part of Hawaiian history, those who experience the ancient footpath are reminded to not deface, disturb or remove any of the rocks.
