The Kailua Visitor Information Center manned by knowledgeable volunteer ambassadors awaits first-time visitors who come to this lovely beachside town on Oahu. Tucked away at the back of Kailua Shopping Center, the Information Center has handy brochures and maps, including a list of all downtown restaurants with locations marked on a hand-drawn map. Longtime Kailuan volunteers like George Wyman readily offer recommendations on activities. According to George, a common question is “Is Kailua Beach or Lanikai Beach better?” He tells them what is unique about each and let's the visitors decide. Since the center's volunteers are mostly retirees –- and retirees enjoy travel – sometimes there's a sign on the door that says, “Open When Volunteers are Available.” – Shiyana Thenabadu
