Kave Roots, Honolulu

A gathering of island attitudes is always fresh and foremost here. It's more of a shack than a shop and more of a juice bar and healthy eats than an espresso spot. But in the evenings the mic is hooked up, and the kava roots are mashed to make a Polynesian mix of highly intoxicating dirt-tasting drinks that will send you reeling. Come later in the evenings when the crowd really gets raucous, or early to get a seat and to sip the nightly brew. They are also open for breakfast and have a killer selection of desserts in the evening to wash down the bitter kava. - Lottie Tagupa
