Best Maui Nightlife

AOL PICK from our Editors

Historically, even the best Maui nightlife has not elevated to the place of gaining buzz as a huge late-night party place. However, there are a few of the best Maui bars and nightclubs that come unglued from time to time. In Kahului several bars attract the locals and the after-work crowd especially for sporting events, such as football and mixed martial arts events. Sports bars like the Ale House draw a regular and decent local crowd. The tourist areas of Kihei and Lahaina have several clubs running live bands and local entertainment focused on young tourists looking for fun. Overall, the best Maui nightlife still has a long way to go before it becomes a bawdy party town. The island by and large is a quiet peaceful place in the evening where everyone relaxes from days filled with hard work or fun in the sun.

Old Lahaina Lu'au

Neighborhood: West Maui

This madly popular award-winning dinner show has it all. From poi to roast pig to packed rum punch, it’s a full evening of festive fun. There are lots of grass-level seats and an abundance of grass skirts with coconut-shell tops. The umbrella drinks circulate with strong punch and by the end of the evening just about everyone is doing the hula. Then, of course, there is the lu’au buffet. Find lots of traditional choices here, such as lau lau, lomi lomi salmon and kalua pig, and local faves like fiddlehead fern salad and taro coconut plates. Poi? Like Spam, it's an acquired taste, but this is the place to try it. Advance reservations are highly recommended due to the Old Lahaina Lu'au's status as one of the best Maui nightlife scenes. Opt for the table seating, your back will never forgive you if you don’t.

Ulalena

Neighborhood: West Maui

Often overstated as an acrobatic spectacular, Ulalena is, in fact, a well-choreographed, modern theatrical experience presenting Hawaiian history and culture in a timeline of legends and chants. The show includes creation chants and stories from the ancient Hawaiian Kumulipo as well as stories of the yellow-red rain of twilight called Ulalena. The show embraces the many ways that natural elements relate to Hawaiian culture and the identity of the Hawaiian people. The staging, live music and cultural backstory combine for an often stunning, if not engaging and enjoyable, experience capped by an acrobatic performance that is hauntingly beautiful. Advance reservations are recommended.
