Overview
Located behind the Merchandise Mart, Assumption Church is far from any residential neighborhood. While its location may seem odd, it serves those who work in the surrounding commercial area quite well. Its simple, nondescript exterior is also unusual for a church building of 1880s vintage in Chicago. Assumption was the first church built for and by Italian Catholics in Chicago. The Italian Renaissance style of the interior reflects this heritage.
