Overview
The Kentucky Derby is a high stakes equine race for thoroughbred horses, held annually in Louisville on the first Saturday in May. Thoroughbred racetrack Churchill Downs, opened in 1875, hosts the race each year. The Kentucky Derby is preceded by the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival.
