Best New Orleans Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors
New Orleans may be a small city but it can handle large crowds and has more than 30,000 hotel rooms packed into the small downtown area. New Orleans hotels range from large chains and luxury suites in 30-story buildings to cozy bungalows in the slave quarters of centuries-old buildings. While the French Quarter is where you'll find some of the best New Orleans hotels, it’s also one of the most expensive neighborhoods to stay in. If you want a room with a balcony on Bourbon Street, be prepared to pay for it. You should also be prepared for noise in the vicinity of Bourbon Street, especially during Mardi Gras and on the weekends, when the hooting and hollering can carry on until dawn. There are also a wide range of top New Orleans hotels in the Central Business District and the Arts District. A few hotels Uptown along St. Charles Avenue offer lodging options in antebellum homes. For large events such as Mardi Gras and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, be sure to book your room up to a year in advance. During the low season in the summer, you can also find some great discounts at some of the best New Orleans hotels, especially during the weekdays when rooms can go for as much as 30 percent off rack rates.

Hotel Monteleone

Neighborhood: French Quarter Price Range: Expensive
Opened in 1886, Hotel Monteleone has long been one of the best New Orleans hotels. It’s right on Royal Street in the heart of the French Quarter and has 600 guest rooms and 55 suites. The rooms offer everything you expect from a luxury hotel: large televisions, Internet access, mini-bars and marble and granite bathrooms. The decor is Old World; the lobby is a sea of brown and cream marble crowned by a large crystal chandelier and highlighted by an ornate carved grandfather clock that towers over plush conversation groupings. There's a full service spa, pool area, a casual cafe and an elegant fine dining bistro. Monteleone's lounge, the Carousel Bar, is one of the most popular lounges in New Orleans and has been immortalized in New Orleans history (the bar is actually a carousel that turns on 2,000 large steel rollers)—definitely make time to come here for a drink, even if you’re not a guest. A number of movies have been filmed here in recent years including Double Jeopardy in 1999 and 12 Rounds in March 2008 and it’s not uncommon to see a celebrity passing through the lobby.

Chateau Hotel

Neighborhood: French Quarter Price Range: Moderate
Room rates in the French Quarter tend to be pricey, but you can often get one of the 45 rooms here for about $100 a night. The Chateau is one of the top New Orleans hotels with moderate (if not bargain) rates and such a great location. The place has an Old World, French country-house feel to it and there's a nice courtyard with a pool. It lacks some of the amenities of the big luxury properties, but it's clean and cozy and it’s not like you’re going to spend much time in your room anyway. The nearby garage and valet parking takes a lot of the hassle out of staying in the French Quarter and the morning newspaper at your door is a nice touch.

Le Pavillon Hotel

Le Pavillon Hotel

Neighborhood: Central Business District Price Range: Moderate
Tradition is the order of the day at the Le Pavillon Hotel. On entering Le Pavillon, the hotel’s heritage and high standards are on full display. Calming classical music flows through a lobby studded with Louis XV bronze cherubs, crystal chandeliers and priceless antiques and paintings. Built in 1907 and impeccably restored, the rates are very reasonable (under $300 per night) for the quality of the property. A number of movies have been filmed at Le Pavillon in recent years and it’s popular with celebrities and politicians. Rooms feature traditional style furnishings and the suites are some of the most exquisite (and expensive) in New Orleans. This may come as a surprise, but in keep with its dedication to tradition Le Pavillon serves free peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the evenings (it all started when a homesick guest asked for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich—a request that so charmed the management that they kept offering the nostalgic treat long after the guest had left). Even many of the staff have been here for decades. We love the rooftop pool for its amazing views of the city. If you're looking for old town charm and classic tradition in a city of anything goes Le Pavillon is one of the best places to stay in New Orleans.

Chateau Dupre French Quarter

Chateau Dupre French Quarter

Neighborhood: French Quarter Price Range: Budget
In the French Quarter on Decatur Street near the corner of Canal, this small hotel has been welcoming guests for more than 80 years. There are 62 rooms and suites with the basic amenities (irons, clock radios, television and in-room coffee and tea). It's not the most luxurious hotel in town and it shows its age, but it is one of the best deals in the French Quarter if you're just looking for a place to sleep and take a shower. Considering the great location—there are more than a dozen restaurants and lounges in a two block radius—you're unlikely to spend much time in the room anyway.
