Overview
Touro Synagogue was formed with the merger of two existing Jewish congregations of New Orleans: the German Jewish Shangarai Chasset and the Sephardic Portuguese Jewish Nefutzot Yehudah in 1828. Touro is now a reform synagogue and plays an active role in the local community, especially with its annual Jazzfest Shabbat—which coincides with the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
