Best Baltimore Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors

Baltimore’s best hotels run from high-rise corporate, conventioneer properties around the Inner Harbor, to intimate bed and breakfasts in her residential neighborhoods, to one of our favorite hostels anywhere. Booking online will get you good deals at the chain places in particular, but to really get a sense of the city, consider the smaller mom-and-pop places we love. All have great records for attention and customer service.

Hotel Monaco Baltimore

Neighborhood: Inner Harbor Price Range: Expensive

The Monaco has just about perfected the art of imparting a sense of early- to mid-20th century art deco cool—the sort of vibe that will get “Mad Men” fans in cocktail-sipping, smoking-jacket-wearing heat. Located in the original Baltimore & Ohio Railroad headquarters, an architectural highlight in a city with an embarrassment of architectural highlights, the Monaco screams classy elegance from her marble lobby floors all the way up the columns three floors to Tiffany (real) stained-glass windows. Rooms come with all the amenities and lovely views across town, especially at night. Interiors are a snazzy blend of solid colors, geometric patterns and clean lines, which all bespeaks an understated cool.

Pier 5 Hotel

Neighborhood: Inner Harbor Price Range: Expensive

Most of the hotels in the Inner Harbor area are boring fixtures on the big-box convention circuit. Pier 5 took a look at that tired image and said, “Screw that.” Yes, this is a big, waterfront hotel. But the rooms, the lobby, even the service have a bouncy, exuberant feel; your digs come decked out in bright purples and bold patterns that are a little more adventurous than what you get from the average place that caters to a business demographic. That said, have a look in different rooms, as some are a little more staid and stolid. You can spoil yourself as badly as you want via attentive room service and an excellent concierge. Harbor views are great.

The Inn at Henderson's Wharf

Neighborhood: Fells Point Price Range: Expensive

We say opt for the harbor-view rooms at the Inn. Sure, they’re pricier, but the point of staying anywhere with “wharf” in the title is the classical waterfront views, right? And they’re good views, what with the floor-to-ceiling windows you can peek out of from your queen-size bed. There’s a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival (and the wine isn’t bad, honest), and a general vibe of Old World charm, nautical tat and perky—a little scarily so—service. This is a favorite for returning visitors or Baltimoreans who want to put up friends somewhere nice.

Celie's Waterfront Bed & Breakfast Celie?s Waterfront Inn

Celie's Waterfront Bed & Breakfast

Neighborhood: Fells Point Price Range: Moderate

Celie’s is a bit cutesy and a lot cozy, the sort of B&B where Baltimoreans like to book their guests, because it’s the kind of place that exemplifies the, well, charm for which Charm City is known. Unlike the big-box properties, all of the rooms here have great views, be it onto a center courtyard, leafy garden or the Baltimore harbor. The third-floor brick-walled Suite 9 is an exercise in contemporary interior excellence, and while it’s a bit much for a couple, it’s perfect for a family. If you want B&B-style digs by the water, this is your spot.

Inn at 2920

Inn at 2920

Neighborhood: Fells Point Price Range: Moderate

The Inn is one of our favorite digs in town. It’s a B&B that eschews the antique frippery that is so consistent within the genre in favor of contemporary interior design and the best of amenities. The five individually-appointed rooms come in various shades of two-tone trendy, with accents like Jacuzzis, Gilchrest & Soames toiletries, high-thread-count sheets you could live on and a playful sense of hip throughout—the sexy Bordello is our favorite. This intense coolness does not mean a sacrifice in warm hospitality from owners Warren Munroe and David Rohrbaugh, who do their damndest to make your Baltimore vacation an interesting one. You’re within easy pass-out distance of the great nightlife in Canton Square—a big bonus.

Peabody Court

Neighborhood: Mt Vernon Price Range: Moderate
Another favorite, the Peabody is the rare sort of hotel that offers the amenities of a large property coupled with the warmth of a neighborhood experience. The goodness starts in the lobby of this 1928 building, where you enter under the lights of a multi-tiered Baccarat chandelier. Classiness continues into the rooms, which are decked out in a mixture of period-style French marble top furniture, marble bathrooms and historically-themed art. The historic-cum-boutique hotel theme is well executed throughout, and you won’t lack for help from the useful concierge office. Don’t discount location; when you’re here, you’re in a prime location for exploring Mount Vernon, one of the state’s prettiest, most bar- and restaurant-filled, and activity-heavy historic districts.

Admiral Fell Inn

Neighborhood: Fells Point Price Range: Moderate
Located in the heart of Fells Point (hence the name, although we do appreciate the stupid pun), the Admiral is built out of seven historic properties, dating from the 1770s, that, put together, constitute a reasonably fun emulation of a harbor-side hotel experience. The old-school waterfront feel generates from a European-style boutique exterior along Fells Point’s main drag. Inside, the theme is realized, more or less, via clean, comfortable rooms that are decked out in various levels of maritime tat. The specialty rooms, with their canopied beds and hot tubs, are good for some seaside spoiling.

Aunt Rebecca's Aunt Rebecca?s

Aunt Rebecca's

Neighborhood: Mt Vernon Price Range: Moderate

We’re not going to outright say Aunt Rebecca’s is a girly B&B, but look: their four rooms are themed Duchess, Princess, Queen and Cinderella. Just sayin’. And, for the record, we opt for the blue-and-yellow, China-porcelain reminiscent Duchess Room. If you’re into lace accents, pretty period furniture like claw-foot bathtubs and a profusion of cozy accoutrements—the antique embellishments that make you feel like you’re having a spoiled stay at Grandma’s—pop on in. That sense of familiarity is helped along by the very lovely innkeepers, who bend over backwards to make you feel at home.

Scarsborough Fair B&B Scarborough Fair B&B

Scarsborough Fair B&B

Neighborhood: South Baltimore Price Range: Moderate

Not too modern, not too lacey, the Scarborough Fair is just about right in the execution of its six rooms. The décor is pretty without being over the top in any one direction, although our favorite room is the Edgar Allen Poe suite, with its gothic-chic accents and a literary wink in the form of a bust of Pallas. While these interiors may seem a little middle-of-the-road in terms of their decorative flair, the service is hardly such; the owners are energetically kind and accommodating, and the Federal Hill location leaves South Baltimore and the Inner Harbor at your fingertips. They aim to provide organic and locally-grown ingredients in the complimentary breakfast.

Baltimore Hostel Branden Rush

Baltimore Hostel

Neighborhood: Mt Vernon Price Range: Budget
If you end up staying here during a tour around the U.S., count yourself lucky to be in one of the best HI hostels in the country. The Baltimore Hostel is located in a former mansion, built in 1857, that had become a local hangout for bicycle messengers, who sometimes did drugs in the basement during the bad old days of the 1990s. After years as an eyesore, the property was renovated through community work and became the lovely accommodation it is today. The mansion is as beautiful as it once was, decked out in pretty, decorative touches like carved wall paneling and embellished column tops. Dorms are clean and comfy, and the enthusiastic staff and international vibe are all reminders of why we learned to love hostelling and backpacking in the first place.
