One of Detroit's oldest Italian restaurant, located in what used to be known as Little Italy, a neighborhood near the Eastern Market, has survived several cycles of neighborhood blight and revival. Roma Cafe's tuxedo-clad wait staff and fancy traditional Italian food have remained in place, as the family business has passed down through generations. Old-world charm seeps through the wood paneling in the 100-year-old house. The menu is large and the place is bustling, especially on weekend evenings, when reservations are a must. Veal is the specialty here, but chicken can be substituted in most dishes. Homemade pastas complement the huge array of meat and vegetarian entrees. The homemade cannoli is a popular dessert.
