Best Omaha Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors

This is the Midwest and in particular, a very practical region of Iowa and Nebraska. Luxury stays are few and far between, but Omaha’s best hotels make up for it with sincere hospitality and comfortable accommodations. The city of Omaha has regulations limiting the number of bed and breakfast inns, so, with the exception of the Cornerstone Mansion, if a B&B is your first choice for lodging, you’ll have to travel a few minutes outside the city limits. Crossing the river into Council Bluffs and other Iowa communities is not as dramatic a choice as it sounds, plus the rural region of Iowa here offers an additional opportunity to experience all that the Midwest has to offer.

Hilton Omaha

Neighborhood: Old Market Price Range: Expensive

Connected to the Qwest Center by a covered walkway, the Hilton Omaha is Nebraska’s only Four Diamond Hotel and is as much an art gallery as it is a priority option in lodging. The light fixtures throughout the public spaces were created internationally and fabricated by Preciosa of the Czech Republic. More than 100 pieces of framed art represent the talents of regional artists of national and international renown. This Hilton property has 450 guest rooms, but visitors can stop in simply to enjoy the art while having a drink in the lounge.

Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast

Neighborhood: Metro Omaha Price Range: Moderate

Innkeeper Jeanna Stavas is as much a gardener as she is a chef and hostess extraordinaire. Her 130-year-old home is surrounded by gardens, and each spring a variety of perennials from daffodils to daisies are in bloom. The main house has four guest rooms, but only the Victorian Suite has a private entrance. For more privacy, try the adjacent barn that has been renovated to accommodate a family of four. Jeanna whips up a full breakfast every morning, often made with vegetables straight from her garden. Check for her packages for holiday stays or to accompany a special event at the inn.

The Historic Wickham House

Neighborhood: Metro Omaha Price Range: Moderate

Located just across the Missouri River in downtown Council Bluffs, this lovely brick home is almost as old as the community itself. You’ll find lots of stained-glass windows and antiques throughout the house and in each of the two guest rooms. The bathrooms and other amenities have been remodeled and updated to modern standards. This is the place to stay if you love history, as the original architect of this home built many structures around Council Bluffs. It’s also the place to stay if you travel with your pet, or love pets, because the owners have three dogs who’ll treat you just like family.

Cornerstone Mansion Inn Cornerstone Mansion Inn

Cornerstone Mansion Inn

Neighborhood: Midtown Price Range: Moderate

Steeped in the history of Omaha, the Cornerstone Mansion was the dream of the Offutt family, for whom nearby Offutt Air Force Base is named. Built in the 1890s, the house remains as elegant by today’s standards as it was at the end of the 19th Century. Seven guest rooms are uniquely decorated and are quite opulent, some with working fireplaces, claw foot tubs and mahogany woodwork. The current owner-operators have deep roots in the Omaha theater community, as actors, playwrights and directors, and can offer lots of insight into current and upcoming productions around the city, or the special events at nearby Midtown Crossings retail development. Because of zoning and other ordinances, the Cornerstone is Omaha’s only historic bed-and-breakfast inn.

Magnolia Hotel Omaha

Magnolia Hotel Omaha

Neighborhood: Old Market Price Range: Moderate

This wonderful old art deco building dates to 1923, when Chester Cook created an upscale setting for offices, shops and studio apartments. You’ll see engravings of his parents on the front of the building. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Magnolia is Omaha’s only boutique hotel, and a convenient location for exploring the Old Market. However, there’s plenty of energy at the hotel’s restaurant, Hitz On Howard, where happy hour drink specials and occasional live music keep pace with other clubs in the neighborhood. A complimentary hot American breakfast buffet is served here each morning. Wide corridors and original woodwork evoke the hotel’s past, yet the 140 guest rooms have contemporary décor that includes chrome, sleek lines and leather.  Although there’s internet access, there’s no Wi-Fi in the guestrooms.

Ofts Bed and Breakfast

Neighborhood: Metro Omaha Price Range: Moderate

If your idea of relaxation is sitting in rocking chairs on the spacious porch of a beautiful country farmhouse, then plan on relaxing at Ofts Bed and Breakfast, about 20 miles northwest of Omaha in Bennington. This gracious home was actually the dream house of German immigrants who came to this country in 1869. Since it was built in 1910, the house has never left the Mueller family. You’ll see lots of family heirlooms and hear true stories about the people who homesteaded the Nebraska prairie. The house has just two guest rooms, both upstairs, with private baths and a beautiful balcony with views across the Nebraska countryside.

Castle Unicorn Castle Unicorn

Castle Unicorn

Neighborhood: Metro Omaha Price Range: Moderate

Rule your kingdom for a night or two at a faux castle in the Iowa countryside, just 25 miles from downtown Omaha. This isn’t some damp, musty thing from the 15th Century, but it does have a moat, a turret and a basement that would suffice as a dungeon if the situation called for it. This castle was built in the 1980s and has been a B&B for more than a decade. In addition to furnishings that make you feel like royalty, this inn has beautiful gardens, fountains and walking trails for exploration. Come in the winter and enjoy a little cross-country skiing.

Front Porch B&B Front Porch Bed and Breakfast

Front Porch B&B

Neighborhood: Metro Omaha Price Range: Moderate

If you like the idea of a bed-and breakfast stay, but find all of the antiques and Victorian frou-frou just a little tiresome, you’ll want to check out this inn about 30 miles outside of Omaha. The home is old, built in 1908, in a residential area that’s just off the main drag through Ashland, a community in which Norman Rockwell might have received inspiration. However, as you check into your room, you’ll be whisked away to island time with colors of the Caribbean and accessories geared more for the seaside than the Midwest. A full breakfast made to order is available on weekends, but weeknight guests will be given breakfast privileges at a nearby café, so the innkeeper here, who’s still a college student, can make it to morning classes on time.

JoyAus Bed & Breakfast

Neighborhood: Metro Omaha Price Range: Budget

Joy Ausdemore, the owner of this inn, has given it a title that’s an abbreviation of her own name, and, in a clever twist, it’s pronounced “joyous.” Located about 15 miles from downtown Omaha on the northeast side of Council Bluffs, JoyAus B&B is on 13 acres filled with fruit and walnut trees, chickens and a few cattle—all contributing to your morning breakfast. Two of Joy’s three guest rooms share a Jack-and-Jill-style bathroom, but the third has its own private bath. All are on the second floor of this modern home. Enjoy the peace and quiet the country has to offer because you won’t have Wi-Fi or a television in your room.

Crescent View Inn

Neighborhood: Metro Omaha Price Range: Budget

Admire the Omaha skyline from about 20 minutes east of downtown in this inn in a small Iowa community. The inn’s modern home was built by an architect as his dream bachelor pad, so envision flat-screen TVs with HD and internet in the guestrooms. However, the view over the Missouri River Valley, the call of songbirds and occasional wildlife bounding through the back yard is what people enjoy most about this inn. Bring a bottle of wine and watch the sunset from the terrace, or get up early to watch the sunrise from your personal patio. A local ordinance prohibits them from publishing the exact street address, which is given only when people book a room.
