Santa Fe Pop Culture

It's not only the artists who come here for the light. New Mexico is movie country and these films shot in or near Santa Fe give a taste of the landscape and the spirit of the West: All The Pretty Horses, Wyatt Earp, Easy Rider and comedy favorite City Slickers. Love art? The biopic Georgia O'Keeffe starring Joan Allen is a must-see. The Milagro Beanfield War conveys the Land of Enchantment's traditional charm and culture. Directed by Robert Redford in the village of Truchas, 40 miles north of Santa Fe, the movie is based on New Mexico author John Nichols’ bestselling novel—a highly recommended read. Rudolfo Anaya's novel Bless Me, Ultima tells of a small boy's coming of age in a New Mexico village, and Willa Cather's classic novel Death Comes for the Archbishop is based on the real life of Santa Fe’s first Archbishop, Jean Baptiste Lamy, who built the city’s cathedral.
