The 856-acre Chautauqua Institution is a well-known center for performing arts, education, religion and recreation. Founded in 1874 by Lewis Miller and John Vincent as a summer learning experience for Sunday school teachers, this gated community features many homes, cottages and accommodation of Victorian architecture. Of special note is the Athenaeum Hotel, which was built in 1881. During the institution’s nine week summer season, over 150,000 people from all over the world converge on the grounds to hear speakers, attend worship services, participate in workshops and see performances by popular entertainers. Recreational activities, including golfing, swimming, and bicycling are also available. - Christine A. Smyczynski
