Gandhi, New York

This kitschy, dimly illuminated East Village restaurant is named after a revered global leader who is fondly remembered as the founder of modern India. The menu at Gandhi accordingly tries to showcase a wide range of dishes from various regions of the Indian subcontinent, but it oddly also offers many traditional Indonesian dishes. This seems quite out of place for a restaurant that markets itself as primarily as an Indian eatery and not as a Pan-Asian restaurant. However, honorable mentions on Gandhi's menu include dishes like the Chicken Tikka Masala, the Baingan Bharta (smoked eggplant curry) and the Tarka Dal (yellow lentil).
