Williamsburg, Brooklyn usually garners a despised reputation by other city denizens as a place filled with the über-trendy hipster in all its myriad forms and the ever-increasing rents that have squeezed out many of its original inhabitants. However, sometimes gentrification can be a good thing in the case of Rye, which turned this defunct factory into something new. With the authentic taste of home, this little restaurant does not need to try, owner/chef Cal Elliott does everything impeccably in his own do-it-yourself fashion, from the decor to the cuisine. The food is primarily American, with dishes like meat loaf, mac-n-cheese and crab cakes to the more exotic Long Island duck breast or pear and endive salads. They also provide a prix-fixe menu and blue plate specials throughout the week.
