Founded in 1970 by Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark, White Columns (formerly known as the 112 Workshop) is New York's oldest alternative art space. The gallery features work done by up-and-coming New York artists who do not have any commercial gallery representation. Artists submit their work to the online registry, at which point some art gets displayed at the gallery, while others might be lucky enough to get special exhibitions. The non-profit gallery is open 11 months out of the year and admission is free.
