Best Niagara Falls Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors

Niagara Falls’ best hotels aren’t necessarily the closest ones to its premier attraction (the falls, to state the obvious). For top Niagara Falls accommodations you have to stick to the downtown area around the Seneca Casino, which is also where you’ll find Niagara’s newest (and only) luxury boutique hotel, or travel to Lewiston. Clustered around the Niagara Falls State Park you’ll find plenty of top-end B&Bs, as well as some mid-range chains and a few downscale B&Bs located in old renovated Victorians. They’re well-kept and still lovely, but lack the amenities that would bump them up a rung on the style ladder.

The Giacomo<br>

The Giacomo

Neighborhood: Downtown Niagara Falls Price Range: Expensive

At long last, Niagara Falls has a luxury boutique hotel. The Giacomo is jewel-box lovely on the inside and art deco crazy on the outside. It's housed inside an old office building constructed in 1929, but which was abandoned and empty for more than three decades. It's only got 38 rooms, so, as you would expect, service is prompt and personal; the manager goes out of his way to remember guests' names. Rooms are decorated with big geometric print paintings, sandy-colored walls (except for one wall that’s done with bright, embroidered wallpaper), and dark wood bed frames with earth-toned duvets. Bathrooms have Gothic-influenced fleur-de-lis patterned wallpaper. Many of the suites come with Jacuzzis and/or fireplaces, and all guests can use a hotel town car for rides to Seneca Casino and nearby Niagara Falls, about a 10-minute walk away.

Barton Hill Hotel & Spa

Neighborhood: Lewiston Price Range: Expensive

An elegant country gem in historic Lewiston, the Barton Hill Hotel is a shining example of rural splendor. From the outside it’s a rambling old estate built like a French chateau, but on the inside it’s the epitome of modern comfort. There are trade-offs to staying here, chiefly that you aren’t very close to Niagara Falls. On the other hand, you’re getting an incredibly luxurious suite with a king-sized bed, Italian linens, a fireplace and sitting room, plus all the stuff the digital-age traveler needs (iPod docking, Wi-Fi and so on). The most plum guest rooms have spa-style soaking tubs that overlook Niagara River. There is also a spa onsite where you can unwind with a facial, backrub and massage.

Comfort Inn The Pointe Hotel

Comfort Inn The Pointe Hotel

Neighborhood: Niagara Falls State Park Price Range: Moderate

Location counts for a lot with this Comfort Inn, which is as banal as you'd expect from a big chain, but close enough to Niagara Falls State Park you can practically feel the mist on your face. The cinder block exterior almost looks prison-like, but there's really nothing wrong with the place that some jazzy interior design couldn't fix. Look past the low-ceilings, cheap yellow bedspreads and the lobby’s Formica floor, and focus instead on its proximity to the falls and the fact that it's clean and well-run.

Butler House B & B

Neighborhood: Downtown Niagara Falls Price Range: Moderate
Red-bricked and modest, the Georgian-style Butler House is a cozy old home filled with fireplaces, wood floors and a pretty little sunroom where guests can take in the fresh Niagara air. Taken in its entirety, the house is a nice package. The rooms (there are four) are fine, if not exactly fantastic. Each room has a bed (one room as two), a dresser and a small piece of art, and there’s an occasional decorating clash between a floral bedspread and overly-busy wallpaper. Those are mere quibbles, however, in what is otherwise a perfectly pleasant B&B, one that puts out a hot breakfast daily, as well as mid-afternoon snacks.

Hillcrest Inn

Neighborhood: Downtown Niagara Falls Price Range: Moderate
The name is apt because this renovated Georgian mansion with four rooms does happen to sit on the peak of a hill—that's how you get those gorgeous views of Niagara Falls’ upper rapids. The Master Suite has a private balcony overlooking the thundering water, where you can take your breakfast or sit at night sipping a cocktail. It's fairly heavy on the bridal decor, however, so non-honeymooners might sacrifice the balcony and choose the more neutral Hillcrest Suite, a beauty of a room with deep red roses on its wallpaper, a handsome canopy bed and luxurious green duvet. Another room fronts the pretty garden, and a fourth sits in the back of the house. All have private baths. Full English breakfast (eggs Benedict and asparagus, for example) served daily in the sunny dining room.

Rainbow House Bed & Breakfast

Neighborhood: Downtown Niagara Falls Price Range: Budget

A real Victorian with big bay windows and turreted exterior, Rainbow House not only does honeymoons, it can host your actual wedding. Yes, thanks to an on-site chapel with a pretty, stained-glass window, you can get married here and honeymoon here, if you're of a mind for an all-in-one package. Otherwise, just book one of their fairly small but well-maintained rooms (all have private baths) with wrought-iron bed, usually at least one piece of wicker-style furniture and a smattering of delicate watercolors on the wall. Continental breakfast is served daily.

Hanover House B&B

Neighborhood: Downtown Niagara Falls Price Range: Budget
A bit museum-like, Hanover House is stuffed with plump couches and ancient lounge chairs that practically beg you to flop down on them. Everything, from the four-poster beds to the floral wallpaper to the lacy bedspreads, screams “old-fashioned charm”—so much so you may be a bit fed up with it before long. The lovely old Italianate house is spacious and well-maintained, and rooms are imbued with an aura of romance (which is why this is a popular choice among budget-conscious honeymooning couples), plus you’re an easy 20-minute walk from the main attractions. Guests are given ample breakfast (eggs, cereal, bagels and more) in the morning, and the friendly manager is happy to share tips about Niagara's lesser-known charms, as well.

Elizabeth House Bed & Breakfast

Neighborhood: Downtown Niagara Falls Price Range: Budget

From the outside, the Georgian-style facade of the four-room Elizabeth House B&B doesn't seem all that appealing. It's a lie, because inside this is one of the most modern and attractive bed and breakfasts you'll find in Niagara Falls. The shiny hardwood floors and period moldings are beautifully set off by brightly-painted walls in the common areas and guest rooms. Instead of older period pieces the owners here have opted for sleek, minimalist couches, chairs and beds with just a few actual antiques sprinkled about. The atmosphere feels unique and historic without coming off as outdated, and that carries into the comfortable bedrooms (most have private baths, but two share). Breakfast is included with your stay.
