Best Charlotte Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors

When considering the best places to stay in Charlotte, choices stretch across a wide gamut: from cozy inns to historic hotels to resorts. The main hotel district is in Uptown Charlotte, which features the best Charlotte hotels. This is where you’ll find the first-class, high-rise hotels. Lodging is most expensive in Uptown, and often the most difficult to book during the peak seasons. As you move farther out from Uptown toward the South End, South Park and Ballantyne, accommodations become more reasonably priced. The smaller hotels and inns in this region offer a better value than the downtown hotels, but require a bit of a drive. During the late spring and summer, we recommend booking reservations at least several weeks in advance.

Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge

Neighborhood: Ballantyne Price Range: Expensive

The Ballantyne is really the only true resort hotel in Charlotte. Guests will need to have a car to reach this country club, spa-like resort, since it’s a half-hour drive from downtown. The Ballantyne has a grandiose main building that overlooks the property, while the lodge and cottage have a country feel to them. Ask for a room with a golf view, otherwise you may be staring out at a parking lot. Guest rooms are average in size, and feature charming southern décor, with large flat-screen televisions and a wet bar. We especially like the suites, which have as much as 1,200 square feet of space. The hotel’s 20,000 square-foot spa is widely-acclaimed; others come to the Ballantyne for the golf. While the Gallery restaurant is okay, we prefer the Gallery Bar and Veranda Bar, which has a great view of the 18th Fairway. Other amenities on-site include two swimming pools, tennis courts and boutique shops.

Dunhill Hotel

Neighborhood: Uptown Price Range: Expensive

The Dunhill Hotel is one of the best Charlotte hotels, and one with a vibrant and colorful past that dates back to the early 1900s. With its beautiful architecture and grandiose décor, it's by far the most elegant hotel in the city. Only 10 stories high, it retains the same historic architecture as it had when it opened in 1929. Guest rooms at the Dunhill offer a nice balance of vintage décor and contemporary furniture—although the beds are not the most comfortable we've ever stayed in. The staff is attentive and welcoming; guests are often older and loyal clientele who have been visiting for years. The onsite restaurant, Monticello, is pricey, but well done and worth it. With its Uptown location in the heart of the city, Dunhill provides easy access to downtown Charlotte restaurants and attractions.

The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte

The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte

Neighborhood: Uptown Price Range: Expensive

Another top Charlotte hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, has long been the epitome of luxury, and the brand new (2009) Uptown property certainly is no exception. Located in Uptown, the Ritz-Carlton is in the heart of downtown, highlighting the Charlotte skyline. A drawback to its prime location, though, is the street noise from the Epicenter Pavilion across the street, especially on Thursday through Saturday nights. The plus is the excellent service and Ritz-Carlton quality. Guest rooms are plush, offering great views of the Charlotte skyline. The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte features all the best of the digital age, including our favorite -- LCD TVs built into the bathroom mirror. Features of the hotel include a two-story penthouse health center with an indoor pool, a hot tub and spa treatments. The Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte offers free transportation services on weekdays.

Hilton Charlotte Center City

Hilton Charlotte Center City

Neighborhood: Uptown Price Range: Moderate

The Hilton Charlotte Center City follows in a long line of upscale business hotels in Charlotte. Geared toward corporate travelers, the hotel includes a business center and large meeting space. With its location in Uptown Charlotte, it offers scenic views of the Charlotte skyline and outer lying areas, and is close to major attractions. But since this is an Uptown hotel, you'll have to pay to park ($18 for self park). The rooms have recently been redone in purple themes. It looks good, but can be a bit overwhelming if you don't like purple. The beds are quite comfortable, and the guest rooms nicely decorated and have flat screen TVs. Internet service can sometimes be slow. Some room price plans include Internet service. The Hilton Charlotte Center City has a beauty salon and a coffee shop that’s perfect for grabbing a quick breakfast in the morning.

The Westin Charlotte

The Westin Charlotte

Neighborhood: Uptown Price Range: Moderate

One of Charlotte’s city-center hotels, this upscale business property also caters to couples and families who want luxury in downtown Charlotte. It’s just a few minutes from most of downtown’s attractions, including Bank of America Stadium, the Charlotte Bobcat Arena and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. With its unique, contemporary architecture and blue glass windows, the Westin looks like something in Tokyo, rather than Charlotte. This is a Westin, so quality is a given, but this Westin might be considered on the lower end for a Westin. The guest rooms have good views of the city and deluxe amenities, such as large work spaces, plush bedding (the beds are heavenly) and even dual shower heads. The health club at this 700-room hotel is top notch—we like the individual TV screens for every machine and the indoor pool. The price for the buffet breakfast here is a bit steep. You might want to go elsewhere if you want a better value for breakfast.

The Duke Mansion

Neighborhood: Myers Park/South Park Price Range: Moderate

This Bed & Breakfast is listed in the national Register of Historic Places. Once owned by James Buchanan Duke, founder of Duke University, it is now operated as a nonprofit with all proceeds going to preserve this community treasure. The mansion and its beautiful grounds are located in Myers Park, one of Charlotte's most prestigious neighborhoods. The décor is southern Victorian, with black and white marble floors and a big porch with white columns and rocking chairs. Each of the 20 guest rooms is unique, combining classic elegance with modern comfort, such as plush robes, fine toiletries and comfortable beds. We love the newspapers at our door each morning, and the huge homemade breakfasts.

Free happy hour, free breakfast, free Internet and big two-room suites—these are some of the reasons we like the Hyatt Summerfield Suites. Located right off Interstate 77, the hotel is just minutes from the Charlotte airport.
