Best Cincinnati Hotels

AOL PICK from our Editors

Seven of Cincinnati’s largest hotels are downtown. This bodes well for the traveler looking for a luxury stay. What would cost a fortune in Boston, New York City or Chicago is affordable during a Cincinnati vacation, if you can expand your budget just a bit. People looking for a budget Cincinnati hotel do better in northern Kentucky or in the northern suburbs. When you make your decision, consider parking. Parking can tip the cost of an overnight stay considerably upwards. Although the true budget hotels are mostly chains, anyone willing to bump up to the “moderate” level can snag a Cincinnati bed and breakfast, as well as a hotel.

Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza

Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Expensive

Even if you don’t stay here, go here. Plan a trip to Cincinnati to see it. The Netherland is drop-dead gorgeous. The architectural elements are the best example of 1930s French art deco ever. Opened in 1931, it’s on the list of Historic Hotels of America, and proves that some décor is timelessly chic. Rare Brazilian rosewood paneling, Rookwood tile, stylized leaf and floral patterns, Roman breccia marble and murals with scenes of travelers are only part of the splendor. On the downside, although the 561 guest rooms are renovated, modern and tastefully decorated, they are on the smallish end. But beauty trumps size when you’re talking about the Netherland. And the beds are fantastic.

The Westin Cincinnati

The Westin Cincinnati

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Expensive

Hands down, the Westin’s lobby has the best view of Fountain Square and is best situated to give you the downtown Cincinnati feel even if you don’t go outside. The lobby and guest rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows; if your room faces Fifth Street, watch the ice skaters glide by the fountain in winter. Because the Westin is connected to Cincinnati’s skywalk system, you can get close to many downtown hotspots without getting wet or cold. This modern, sleek Cincinnati hotel with renovated guest rooms has a family-friendly feel, but an energetic, non-fussy vibe that matches Cincinnati’s personality. The hotel pool and guest service are widely praised.

The Cincinnatian Hotel

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Expensive

This Cincinnatian is a French Second Empire-style classic. Opened in 1882, it’s still Cincinnati’s grandest hotel. The original sweeping walnut staircase and marble details of the lobby say 19th-century elegance. But the expanded-size guest rooms are 21st-century luxury comfort. The details and high-end service have earned The Cincinnatian a Mobil Guide Four-Star-rating for the past 20 years. The hotel’s Palace Restaurant has an excellent reputation for an eclectic menu of fine dining. Don’t assume this place is out of reach. The package deals are awesome.

The Mariemont Inn, 10 miles away from downtown Cincinnati, is an option that combines Ohio’s small village life with Cincinnati’s action. The Clifton House

Neighborhood: Clifton/Ludlow Price Range: Moderate

Built in 1900 as a Classical Revival manor home for Henry Morgenthaler, one of Cincinnati’s prominent businessmen, Clifton House is an elegant bed and breakfast that has retained the home’s original beauty. Each of the four bedrooms has uniquely themed décor and a private bathroom. The Garden Room, for example, has a private rooftop garden. For those wishing extra privacy, the Clifton House has a separate two-floor cottage that includes a fireplace and a Jacuzzi. The gourmet breakfast is prepared by a chef who uses the best seasonal ingredients from local farmers’ markets and Findlay Market. While you’re here, take time to browse the books in the library for Cincinnati history, and hang out on the expansive wrap-around porch sipping wine. Innkeeper Nancy Niehaus, who turned the house into a B&B 10 years ago, offers up travel tips, wine and brownies as part of Clifton House’s hospitality.

SpringHill Suites Cincinnati Midtown

SpringHill Suites Cincinnati Midtown

Neighborhood: Mt. Adams Price Range: Moderate

Opened in 2009, the SpringHill Suites Midtown, a Marriott property, is a welcome addition to Eden Park’s landscape. Aesthetically, it fits into an art and garden ambiance. The decorators certainly had a fondness for pale shades of aqua and green. Within walking distance of Krohn Conservatory and the Cincinnati Museum of Art, the hotel is up where views of Cincinnati and northern Kentucky are among the best. It’s an all-suite hotel, which works well for extended families traveling together. Also, the furniture groupings in the large lobby, pool area and outdoor areas encourage visiting. Guests do hang out. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase, although free coffee, tea and apples are available all day. The complimentary breakfast trumps most hotels’ continental offerings—if you don’t see bacon, look under the sausage.

Comfort Inn Greater Cincinnati Airport

Neighborhood: Northern Kentucky
Price Range: Budget

There’s nothing more and nothing less than what’s expected at this suburban chain right off Interstate 71/Interstate 75. The Comfort Inn offers a comfortable bed, large windows, a decent continental breakfast and convenience to both downtown Cincinnati and the airport. Plus, it’s people and pet friendly. With the free airport shuttle, getting here is easy without a car, but the TANK bus into Cincinnati from the stop across the street is mostly a morning and evening occurrence. Another option is to take the shuttle to the airport, then a TANK bus from there. Plenty of eats are within walking distance, although you’d better like the Waffle House and Golden Corral. The location also works for exploring more of northern Kentucky and shopping in Florence, a big-box-store heaven.

The Garfield Suites Hotel

Neighborhood: Downtown Price Range: Budget

The Garfield Suites in downtown Cincinnati hovers at the top end of budget. For what is included, the price is a bargain. Guest rooms include a living room, one or two bedrooms, a dining area and a kitchen, and most of the best things to do in Cincinnati are within walking distance. If you don’t want to walk, the hotel’s courtesy van will take you within a 5-mile radius between 7AM and 10PM. There’s also a sweet deal with the nearby YWCA. For $5 per visit, hotel guests can use the Y, which has the largest indoor pool in town. Oh, yeah: There’s a free manager’s cocktail reception on Wednesdays. This is the only hotel downtown that has rooms with a balcony, but that kind of view of downtown, Mount Adams or northern Kentucky costs $10 more. Still, while you stand on your balcony you can think about how you have something the more expensive hotels don’t have.
