Red Star Tavern and Roast House, Portland

This eatery inside the Fifth Avenue Suites Hotel spans an entire block and attracts a primarily Generation X clientele, although all walks of life frequent it. Good, family-style American food is the theme here. Chef Kyle Rourke prepares salmon, duck, crab, pork and oysters with imagination. The menu includes many meat dishes that have been grilled, fired in the oven, smoked or roasted on the spit, but even the vegetarian is well accommodated.
