The Providence Athenaeum is one of America's oldest subscription libraries and cultural centers. According to 19th-century legend, the poet Edgar Allen Poe courted Sarah Whitman in the stacks of this granite Greek Revival structure. Since the original 18th-century construction, additional rooms have been added. In the Rare Book Library exhibitions of local artists and rare books are on display.
