Overview

Considered one of the first African American churches built in Charleston, the Central Baptist Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed in a Gothic and Italianate architectural style and completed in 1893, one of its greatest features are the Medieval Florentine folk art murals depicting biblical scenes. Located between Coming and St. Philip Streets, the two-story church has a small parking area on the side. There have been additions and modifications over the years. Those interested in history, architecture and Charleston's religious houses will find this church well worth a visit. Call the church for open and tour hours. -Natasha Lawrence
