Charleston already has a rich history of being the pivot of the American War of Independence. In addition, this city also boasts of an affluent cultural lineage, with the construction of the country's first public theater to its credit. Built in 1736, the Dock Street Theatre building is replete with architectural elements from the Antebellum era. Its archways and wrought-iron balustrade are a photographer's delight. Historically a meeting-place for Carolina planters, this theater was restored to its original glory in the 1930s. Today, it is home to the Charleston Stage Company, one of the largest professional theater groups in the state. They stage hundreds of concerts, dramas and events every year as well as shows that acquaint natives, tourists and school students with the rich local culture.
